The word comes via Old French from medieval Latin trānspārēns, the present participle of trānspārēre ‘be seen through’. This was a compound verb formed from the Latin prefix trāns- ‘a(chǎn)cross, through’ and pārēre ‘show, appear’ (source of English appear).
